Religious demography at work in Israel

Author: Michael Blume         Source: Evolution: This View of Life

As thousands of Israelis went out to protest the growing ultra-orthodox extremism in parts of the small country, new attention is given to religious demographies: Throughout the world religions, the devout tend to have more children.

While orthodox Jews tend to have birth rates ranging from 6 (US) to 8 (Israel) children per women, Eric Kaufmann has found this effect within European Judaism, too.

And of course, the same effect can be seen among Christians (i.e. the Old Order Amish), Muslims and other world religions. That's interesting for social and political sciences, as it is for evolutionary studies of religion and anthropology.
