In our inaugural issue, we are pleased to feature an interview with Robert Stephens, who started the Darwin Day movement in Palo Alto in 1995. After retiring from his post as Director of Cell Biology at the Stanford Research Institute, he turned his attention to public awareness about, and appreciation of, evolutionary science. Just as Dr. Stephens used the occasion of Darwin's birthday to educate the general public about science and evolution, the editors of Evolution: This View of Life are proud to provide the same service on a daily basis. In this excerpt, Jiro Tanaka talks with Dr. Stephens about his inspiration for the event. Happy Birthday, Charles Darwin!
